Ghana must do more to fulfil basic sanitation commitments

The Coalition of NGOs in Water and Sanitation (CONIWAS) believes that Ghana cannot proudly declare today that it has done enough to fulfil her 2008 continental commitment to improve basic sanitation services for her people.

The African Ministers Council on Water (AMCOW) organised the second African Sanitation Conference (AfricaSan) in 2008 in Durban, South Africa, where participating countries made pledges, referred to as the eThekwini Declaration, on specific activities and actions to be undertaken with the aim of improving access to basic sanitation services in their respective countries. And Ghana was a signatory to this Declaration.

So far, Ghana has earned some credits in the area of policy reviews and the development of strategies and plans. It is the view of CONIWAS that the priorities should include the strengthening of the capacities of the relevant sanitation institutions, improving  coordination within the sector and providing adequate funding to implement
