Provide shelter for the homeless

Some streets in Accra have been turned into bedrooms by the increasing number of homeless people in the capital.

Even during the day these people are seen sleeping on pedestrian lanes and on road medians not only causing discomfort to pedestrians, but also exposing themselves to the danger of being run over by moving vehicles.

Some of these people may be mistaken for ‘mad’ but further probing will only reveal that they are people of sound mind; but lacking a place of abode.

In other countries, such vulnerable people are given places of temporary abode and are further encouraged to go out to work, but in Ghana, the trend of each one for himself seems to have come to stay.

If every citizen is the responsibility of the state, why can’t the government provide shelter for the homeless people in Ghana?

When the homeless feel there is no one to take care of them, they may become depressed, commit suicide or resort to violence and crime in order to survive.

The government has a responsibility to protect its citizens, out of harm’s way.

There are several buildings in the city which are left to rot away. A little investment on the part of the government can transform such structures into temporary homes for those who have nowhere to lay their heads.
