Chinese special envoy to attend President-Elect Mahama’s inauguration
Chinese President Xi Jinping’s special envoy, Hao Mingjin, Vice Chairperson of the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress, will represent China at the inauguration of Ghana’s President-elect, John Dramani Mahama.
The announcement was made by Guo Jiakun, spokesperson for the Chinese Foreign Ministry, on Monday.
"At the invitation of the government of the Republic of Ghana, President Xi Jinping’s special envoy and Vice Chairperson of the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress Hao Mingjin will attend President John Dramani Mahama’s inauguration in Accra, the capital city of Ghana, on January 7," Mr Jiakun stated.
High-profile event
The inauguration, scheduled for Tuesday, January 7, 2025, at the Black Star Square in Accra, is expected to draw dignitaries from across the globe. Confirmed attendees include Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Kenyan President William Ruto, and delegations from the European Union, the United States, and the United Kingdom.
The event will also host two vice presidents, one speaker of parliament, two former presidents, and representatives from several international organisations, including the Commonwealth and the African Development Bank (AfDB).
Schedule of events
The ceremony will begin with guests being seated by 8:30am. Members of Parliament and other invited guests will then take their places.
At 11am, the Speaker of Parliament will escort the President-elect and Vice President-elect to the Chamber, where formal proceedings will commence.
