68,062 WASSCE candidates qualify for varsity

Sixty-eight thousand and sixty-two candidates, representing 28.11 per cent of the those who wrote this year’s West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE), scored grades A1 to C6  in at least six subjects, including English Language and Mathematics (Core), which qualifies them to enter tertiary institutions in the country.

Following reports of examination malpractices and conclusion of investigations, the entire results of 321 candidates have been cancelled, while 1,994 had their subject results cancelled.

Additionally, the entire results of candidates presented by 36 schools have been withheld while investigations into alleged examination irregularities are being conducted.

The withheld results would be released as soon as the Council concludes its investigations.

This was contained in a statement signed by the Principal Public Affairs Officer of WAEC, Mrs Agnes Teye-Cudjoe on the release of provisional results of candidates who took the May/June 2014 WASSCE.

“The Council is in the process of despatching the results to the schools and candidates are advised to contact the heads of their schools for their results. Meanwhile, the Council has posted the results online and candidates who so desire may access their results on the Council's website.”

“Once again, following a request from the Ghana Education Service (GES), the results of candidates who have outstanding school fees to settle cannot be accessed online on the Council's website. The affected candidates can only access their results from their schools,” it said.

A total of 242,162 candidates took the examination. Out of this number, 126,921 (52.41 per cent) were males and 115,241 (47.59 per cent) females.

The examination was conducted for 809 participating schools. A total of 1,447 (0.59 per cent) of the candidates who registered were absent from the examination.
