The conference, initiated by the Tema International School (TIS), was designed to bring together students to develop their writing techniques and share ideas as well as talents.

Some of the participating schools were: the Tema International School, Tema Senior High School, the Ashaiman Senior High School, Lincoln Community School, and the Ghana International School.

During the conference, participants were put into various groups and, with the help of experienced instructors, were taken through various sessions.

Speaking in an interview with the Junior Graphic, a teacher in the school, Ms Adwoa Abrafi Opoku Mensah, said the conference was aimed at promoting creative writing among students and helping them (young writers) to explore the various fields of creative writing.

She said participants were grouped in fields such as poetry, song writing, short stories, blogging, monologues, journalism as well as characterisation.

The various sessions were facilitated by experienced instructors including Professor Audrey Gadzekpo, Mr Kweku Sakyi Addo, both veteran journalists, Bernard Akoi-Jackson, an accomplished poet, and  Adwoa Abrine, a tutor.

Other facilitators were Alba Kunadu Sumprim, author of the book “The Imported Ghanaian” as well as Nii Ayikwei Parkes,  a writer of poetry, prose and articles.

Some of the participants who shared their thoughts after the session commended the organisers for putting such a programme together.

An SHS Two General Arts Student of the Tema Senior High School, Master Samuel Odonkor, who was in the poetry class, told the Junior Graphic that the sessions were very helpful as they had exposed him to more things around him and how to express such knowledge in writing.

Master William Amponsah, a student of the TIS described the conference as an “amazing experience,” especially the involvement of young people in both intellectual exercises while having fun at the same time.

Ms Francine Clerk of the Tema Senior High School said the conference exposed them to some creative writing techniques she didn’t know about and said she would incorporate them in  her academic studies to improve on her performance.
