Dorothy Amenuke shows her art at Nubuke

An exhibition of works by Dorothy Amenuke, a lecturer in the Department of Painting and Sculpture at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) in Kumasi, opens at 10.00am on Saturday, June 17 at the Nubuke Foundation, East Legon in Accra.

Dubbed ‘Twists, Turns and Broken Doors’, the exhibition entails amorphous shapes, shapes, screens and rows made up from hand printed jute, hand-made paper, palm fibre, a variety  of threads and netting,  polyester fabrics, scroll-like tapestries and  tubular forms  which she has transformed  through several  iterations and manipulation.

“It is going to be an  experience of  fabric and material in  ways  many cannot  imagine,” an official at Nubuke said.

Dorothy Amenuke received a PhD in Sculpture from the College of Art in Kumasi  in 2012.  The upcoming show is her premier solo exhibition at Nubuke Foundation.

She has,  however,  took part in two group exhibitions at Nubuke in 2009 and 2013. She has exhibited in several institutions in Ghana, Europe and the United States.  Her works are also in the collection at  Stedelijk Museum in the Netherlands.

Her use of fabric and material in her sculpture is to bring them into three-dimensional planes- staging situations and associations whilst inviting viewers  to engage with pertinent social issues in our society today.

The exhibition ends on September 10.
