Aburi Girls Senior High School marks 79th Speech and Prize Giving Day

The government has announced a restructuring of the national School Feeding Programme as part of a broader effort to strengthen food security, improve accountability and enhance nutrition among students.

The new policy, approved by Cabinet on November 7, 2025, grants the Conference of Heads of Assisted Secondary Schools (CHASS) full responsibility for procuring six core grain and legume items: maize, gari, beans, peanuts, millet and soybeans.

The announcement was delivered by the Deputy Chief of Staff at the Presidency, Nana Oye Bampoe Addo, who represented the First Lady, Lordina Mahama, at the 79th Speech and Prize Giving Day of Aburi Girls Senior High School last Saturday.

She explained that the National Food Buffer Stock Company (NAFCO), working with the Ghana Commodity Exchange, will supply an additional twelve essential food items to all senior high schools across the country.

According to her, the revised arrangement is expected to enhance logistical efficiency, stabilise food supply chains and ensure that quality, locally produced staples remain central to student meals.

She noted that the procurement strategy was aligned with the government’s Made-in-Ghana agenda. “Importantly, the procurement of all grains, poultry and eggs will be sourced exclusively from local Ghanaian producers, reinforcing the government’s commitment to the Made-in-Ghana campaign and supporting local farmers and agribusinesses,” she said.

Addressing the gathering on behalf of the First Lady, Nana Oye Bampoe Addo commended school authorities, alumni and parents for sustaining Aburi Girls’ legacy of excellence. She also announced a donation of GH¢20,000 on behalf of the First Lady and praised the 2000-year group of the Aburi Old Girls Association for financing the 79th anniversary celebrations and supporting the school’s legacy project.

The event, themed “A Legacy of Light: Influencing Future Generations,” also served as a platform to highlight education reforms under President John Dramani Mahama’s administration. The Deputy Chief of Staff referenced ongoing improvements to the Free Senior High School policy, major capital allocations to complete E-blocks, the introduction of the “No Fees, No Stress” free tertiary education initiative for first-year students, and new measures to enhance both teacher welfare and infrastructure expansion nationwide.

She reiterated the Ministry’s commitment to working with partner agencies to ensure that Ghanaian students benefit from improved teaching standards and robust learning environments.

In her report, the Headmistress of Aburi Girls, Wilhelmina Obuobisa Atakora, outlined several long-standing challenges confronting the school, including inadequate furniture, uncompleted staff accommodation projects and a persistent water supply problem. She appealed to the government, alumni and stakeholders for assistance while celebrating the school’s academic successes and achievements in extracurricular activities.
