The Vice-Chancellor of the Catholic University of Ghana (CUG), Professor Matthew Glover Addo, has announced that the institution’s governing council has approved the establishment of a medical school and a Faculty of Law to train medical and legal professionals.
He explained that the medical school would be established in partnership with the Catholic Diocese of Sunyani, Holy Family Hospital, and the Christian Health Association of Ghana (CHAG).
Prof. Addo revealed this after he was officially inducted into office at Fiapre near Sunyani in the Bono Region last Saturday.
This initiative, he said, was aligned with both the university's mission and the Ghana Catholic Bishops' Conference (GCBC) vision for quality, values-based medical education.
Prof. Addo, who succeeded Prof. Daniels Obeng-Ofori, becomes the fourth VC of the university since its establishment in 2003.
Accreditation
"Even though this is subject to the accreditation of the programme by the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) and the Ghana Medical and Dental Council (GMDC), my administration will work tirelessly to achieve the vision of the Conference," he said.

The event
Prof. Addo explained that the Faculty of Law, which was scheduled to commence in 2026, was in response to the growing demand for legal education rooted in Catholic values.
He said the university's Research Fund would be strengthened to increase research sponsorship and encourage and support academic staff to enhance their research outputs, with a publication rate of at least two papers per year.
Prof. Addo said CUG would prioritise research and teaching and expand access to high-demand, demand-driven postgraduate, undergraduate, diploma, short and access route courses.
Infrastructure
On infrastructure, he said he would pursue the development of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) infrastructure and services.
The VC added that his goal was to build, maintain and modernise physical infrastructure and ICT for teaching and research.
"I will promote creativity and innovation in teaching and learning, driven by technology.
"I will focus on developing 21st Century skills of our students by expanding and upgrading existing lecture theatres and the various laboratories to support ICT-led education for both undergraduate and postgraduate studies," he said.
Prof. Addo promised to modernise classrooms, allow the use of modern pedagogical aids and provide continuous training of faculty in modern pedagogical skills.
He gave an assurance that ongoing projects would be completed to serve the various departments and pledged to prioritise the construction of a clinic, chapel, lecture halls, an auditorium and an office complex for both staff and students.
Former VC
The former VC, Prof. Obeng-Ofori, who served the university for nine years, urged the new VC to work assiduously to operationalise the Faculty of Law and the Medical School in the 2025/2026 academic year.
He said high student enrolment into CUG would place it on the right footing to become a good conduit for addressing wide-ranging issues of local and global importance.
