Lekma 2 Primary tops Twisco recycling challenge, wins GH¢100,000 prize

Lekma 2 Primary School has emerged as the winner of the maiden edition of the “Sachet to Treasure Schools Challenge”, a recycling initiative by Promasidor Ghana aimed at promoting environmental sustainability among basic schools in the Greater Accra Region.

The school secured the top position with 47,760 points after collecting the highest number of used Twisco sachets, earning a GH¢100,000 prize. Lekma 5 Junior High School placed first runner-up with 33,931 points, while Omanjor M/A 3 School took the second runner-up position with 28,404 points.

The competition, organised in partnership with the Ghana Education Service, initially involved 82 basic schools, with the top 50 progressing to the second phase of the challenge.

At an awards ceremony, the Head of Quality, Sustainability, Safety, Health and Environment at Promasidor Ghana, Bernadette Klu, said the initiative forms part of the company’s broader efforts to address plastic waste while instilling environmental responsibility in young people.

“As a business, we are engaging school children to imbibe in them the importance of waste segregation, recycling and sustainability,” she said.

She noted that the programme aligns with key Sustainable Development Goals, including good health and well-being, clean water and sanitation, sustainable cities and communities, and responsible consumption and production.

Ms Klu commended all participating schools and singled out outstanding student performers for their efforts in collecting sachets.

“Special mention goes out to David Eyram Dabi of Omanjor School, followed by Priscilla Addo of Teshie Lekma 2 Primary and Samuel Mensah of Lekma 5 JHS for showing exceptional efforts in collecting sachets,” she said.

The initiative not only rewarded schools for their environmental efforts but also encouraged behavioural change among pupils by introducing practical recycling activities into their daily routines.

Receiving the award on behalf of the winning school, the Headmistress of Lekma 2 Primary, Vida Naa Dedei Aboagye, expressed appreciation to the organisers for introducing the programme and recognising the efforts of participating schools.

“We thank Twisco for birthing this wonderful environmental sustainability project, and rewarding the top 50 schools and top three students with cash prizes, a factory visit and some Promasidor products,” she said.
