Ogyeahoho Science & Tech Fair trains over 2,000 students

An estimated 2,250 students from basic and senior high schools participated in the inaugural edition of the Ogyeahoho Science & Tech Fair, held in Sefwi Awaso in the Bibiani-Anhwiaso-Bekwai Municipality in the Western North Region.

The fair, an initiative of the Omanhene of the Sefwi Anhwiaso Traditional Area, Ogyeahoho Yaw Gyebi II, was organized in partnership with the Ghana Education Service (GES) and hosted by Avance Media. It drew beneficiaries from 50 schools within the region and commenced on July 22, culminating on Friday, July 26, 2024.

Held under the theme "Empowering Tomorrow's Innovators Today," the week-long fair was sponsored by Asante Gold Corporation, a mining firm in the region, as part of its corporate social responsibility initiative to empower local communities.

Students were introduced to various STEM fields, including coding, website development, virtual reality, app development, DNA extraction, open flexure, robotics, 3D printing, drone technology, artificial intelligence, and digital skills.

In a brief address, the General Manager of Asante Gold, Stephen Asante Yamoah, stated, "Our operations at Chirano and Bibiani are more than just mining activities – they represent our dedication to fostering sustainable development and creating opportunities for the youth in our communities."

He emphasized that focusing on science and technology in student training could significantly impact lives and drive economic growth in the region.

Speaking on behalf of Ogyeahoho Yaw Gyebi II, the Chief of Sefwi Ntakam, Nana Kwadwo Somiah II, highlighted the importance of STEM in today's workforce.

Western North Regional Director of Education, Seth Boateng, commended the organizers and sponsors for their efforts in promoting education in the region. "This is, indeed, a platform for students in this area to showcase their creativity, ingenuity, and problem-solving skills," he noted.
