Primetime Limited, the organisers of the National Science and Maths Quiz (NSMQ), have explained why a highly anticipated quarter-final match was postponed after an "uncontrollable crowd" breached security and overwhelmed the venue at the University of Cape Coast.
The contest, which was scheduled for Thursday, October 30, 2025, and was to feature three of Ghana's most renowned rival schools—Prempeh College, Adisadel College, and Mfantsipim School—was called off for safety reasons following a significant disruption.
In a statement dated October 31, 2025, the management of Primetime Limited detailed the events that led to the postponement.
"The postponement became necessary, following a disruption caused by an uncontrollable crowd that forced its way into the auditorium, despite several measures we had put in place to manage the numbers," the statement read.
The organisers defended their choice of the School of Graduate Studies Auditorium, acknowledging that while larger spaces exist on campus, their decision was based on practical considerations.
"We acknowledge that there are larger auditoriums on campus. However, factors such as availability, accessibility, and suitability for our stage setup informed our choice of venue. The School of Graduate Studies Auditorium was the most viable option, and we made provision there for the expected crowd."
Preparations had been made to accommodate the expected large turnout. Each of the three competing schools was allocated a quota of 50 supporters. For those unable to enter the main hall, the organisers installed "three outdoor screens, with chairs and canopies for comfort." Furthermore, "Two seminar rooms were also set up to stream the contest live. In addition, we arranged for police and campus security to maintain order."
Despite these extensive measures, the situation escalated. "Unfortunately, the desire of many to be inside the recording hall led to the breach and the long hold-up of the start of the contest," the management stated. Faced with a volatile situation, the organisers deemed cancellation the only safe option. "Calling off the contest was the safest decision, under the circumstances, as we wished to prevent possible clashes among supporters, especially after the contest and under the cover of darkness."
Primetime Limited issued a sincere apology to all affected parties. "We sincerely apologise to the participating schools, fans and all our stakeholders who were disappointed by the turn of events. Any inconvenience to you is deeply regretted."
The statement concluded with a reassurance of their commitment to safety: "We wish to assure you that Primetime places a premium on ensuring the protection of life and property at all times and that we shall continue to do all we can to provide a safe environment for all who participate in our competitions." A new date for the contested quarter-final is yet to be announced.
