3 Students killed in accident at Okponglo

Three students of the University of Professional Studies (UPS) and Ghana Institute of Languages (GIL) have died after slamming their salon car into a stationary truck at Okponglo, on the Legon-Madina Road, in Accra.

The three have been identified as Rashidatu Iddrisu, 23, a student of the GIL, Mildred Alyine, 23, of the UPS and Ahmed Ben Anis, 25, of the GIL.

Anis who was driving the car died on the spot, while Iddrisu and Alyine died later when they were taken to the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital in Accra for medical attention.

A fourth victim, identified as Issa Razak, a 27 year-old student, is currently in critical condition at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital.

Stationary vehicle 

The Legon District Police Commander, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Mr Emmanuel Basintali,  told the Daily Graphic that the accident happened at about 3a.m. last Thursday.

He said the students were driving a Nissan Amera from Shiashi to the UPS campus when they drove into the stationary vehicle at Okponglo.

According to Mr Basintali, the long truck which was packed with bags of cement drove off immediately the accident happened.

He said with the help of the police team that was dispatched to the scene and some Good Samaritans, the three victims were taken to Korle Bu while the police conveyed the body of the deceased to the Police Hospital motuary

“At the hospital, two of the students, namely, Rashidatu Iddrisu and Mildred Alayine, died while Razack is still on admission.”

He said the police were hoping Razack would survive to provide the police with information that could lead to the arrest of the driver of the long vehicle.
