The Resource Person at Afram Publications, Mrs Ohui Agbenyega, has underscored the importance of mentoring schoolchildren to encourage them to develop the habit of reading.

She said reading opened up the minds of children and exposed them to the world around them.

Mrs Agbenyega said this at the 4th Mini Book Fair and Reading Clinic held in Accra for selected schools.

She said book fairs and reading clinics were necessary to prepare children adequately as they climbed the academic ladder and commended the Managing Director of Afram Publications, Ms Harriet Tagoe, for her vision and effort to promote reading in schools through such programmes.

Mrs Agbenyega explained that although it was not the first time the company was holding a reading clinic, it was its first time of organising the book fair and the reading clinic on the same platform.

Participating schools were the Abofu Presbyterian Junior High School, the Glorious Shining Star International School, Kwashiebu, and Confidence Academy, Ofankor.
The pupils sat in groups and were mentored through their reading sessions.

Mrs Agbenyega, on behalf of Afram Publications, presented books to all the participating schools.

Explaining the rationale for the programme in an interview, the Sales and Marketing Manager of the company, Mr Robert Atobrah, told the Daily Graphic that the Mini Book Fair was designed to promote Ghana Education Service (GES)-approved and recommended textbooks.

Invest in children

The books ranged from textbooks to reading books from pre-school through primary to junior high school.

He added that the programme was also aimed at bringing parents, guardians, teachers, owners of bookshops, as well as all stakeholders in the educational sector, together to acquire the required reading materials for their academic work.

He said he was hopeful that through the programme, schools and students would be exposed to the right books and not just any reading books or textbooks some students were made to patronise.

Ms Tagoe, for her part, encouraged parents to invest more in their children’s education to make them responsible adults capable of being leaders in our society.
She said despite the challenges facing the economy, it was still important to devote a major part of state and individual resources to the education of children.
