The equipment included suction machines, general surgery packs and supplies, surgical instruments and dental supplies.

It was sourced through a partnership with Project Cure, a health delivery NGO in the USA, with the aim to enhance lives in developing countries through healthcare delivery.

Keeping faith with communities

The Managing Director of AGA, Mr Eric Asubonteng, who presented the items to the hospital at Obuasi, said despite the fact that the Obuasi mine was no longer producing after it relocated upstream, the company had been very supportive and had kept faith with the communities it once operated.

“The company has over the years supported the hospital in various ways including the provision of doctors’ bungalows, generators and the construction of some wards,” he said.

He said the company intended to continue to support the people of Obuasi as long as it was within its means.

Mr Asubonteng said the AGA management was considering making similar donation to the other 18 health facilities at Obuasi.

“In spite of the challenges the company is currently experiencing, we remain true to our values as a committed member of the Obuasi community and Adansiman,” he said.

Empathise with patients

The Ashanti Regional Minister, Mr John Alexander Ackon, who received the items on behalf of the hospital, urged health workers in the facility to empathise with patients to help speen up their recovery.
