Biogas Plant for Kumasi Abattoir

A biogas plant under the United Nations International Development Organisation (UNIDO) Biogas Project is to be built at the Kumasi Abattoir in the Ashanti Region in April this year.

The 1.28-million Euro project, funded by the Korean government, is aimed at supporting the greening industries programme in Ghana.

The project will also generate energy from the productive use of animal waste from the abattoir through biogas technology.

Mr Alexander Varghese, the UNIDO Representative, disclosed this when he led a five-member UNIDO delegation to the Minister of Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation (MESTI), Mr Akwasi Opong-Fosu, in Accra.

The visit was to brief the minister on the project and seek his support for additional funding through the Global Environmental Fund.

Project

According to Mr Varghese, the project would involve the construction of an industrial biogas plant using the waste from the abattoir and other agro-processing firms.

He explained that the animal waste would be converted into energy through biogas technology.

Other components of the project include training and capacity building of workers of the abattoir.

He said the Kumasi biogas project would be used as a model that would be replicated across the country in the not-too-distant future.

Minister

Mr Opong-Fosu lauded UNIDO and the Korean government for the initiative, saying the technology could assist the country in managing its waste.

He said the gas to be generated from the waste at the slaughterhouse could be used in singeing the fur of animals, instead of the current practice of using lorry tyres, which is unhealthy.
