CID hunts for answers after American woman deletes viral 'police kidnap' claim video

The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service has begun investigating a viral video in which an American woman alleged that she was kidnapped and robbed by five masked men she claimed were police officers conducting snap checks in Accra.

The woman, identified as Arianna Naomi Mackey, made the allegation in a video shared on social media, which she later deleted. She claimed the incident occurred at a hotel in Accra where she was lodging with two companions.

In a statement issued on December 9, 2025 and signed by Chief Inspector Brigitte Babanawo, Public Relations Officer of the CID, the police indicated that preliminary checks showed Ms Mackey and her companions checked out of the hotel on December 5, 2025.

Further verification at Kotoka International Airport also confirmed that she departed Ghana on the same day.

According to the statement, the police contacted Ms Mackey to assist with the investigation, but she said she was outside the country and did not have the names of the alleged officers or the registration number of the vehicle involved.

Investigators also requested the contact details of the friend she claimed was with her during the alleged incident, but Ms Mackey reportedly said the friend did not want to participate in the process.

The statement added that she later deleted the video and blocked investigators on WhatsApp after declining to respond to calls and messages.

The CID said it is now working through diplomatic channels to secure her cooperation.

The statement stressed that the police take such claims seriously and are committed to establishing the facts.

The CID urged anyone with information about the alleged incident to report to the nearest police station or call the police emergency lines.
