‘Counter new security challenges with modern strategies’

The Minister of the Interior, Mr Kwesi Ahwoi, has charged the Ghana Police Service to come up with new methods to address security challenges in the country.

Mr Ahwoi, who was speaking at the graduation of 59 Deputy Superintendents of Police at the Ghana Police Command and Staff College at Winneba yesterday, asked the graduates to apply the knowledge gained from the training programme to counter the new strategies being adopted by criminals.

The officers underwent a five-week intensive course which covered areas such as intelligence, Information and Communications Technology (ICT) and policing.  

GETFund support

Mr Ahwoi commended the college for its commitment to upgrade the knowledge of personnel and said to demonstrate the government’s commitment to its further development, the college would now receive funding from the Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFund). 

“Funds have been approved and the first phase of the support will be used for the construction of an academic block for the college,” he announced

He said the government would provide the Ghana Police Service and other law enforcement agencies with the required logistics and infrastructure for the training of personnel and urged the police service to stay committed to its responsibility of protecting lives and property and reducing crime.

The Commandant of the Ghana Police Command and Staff College, ASP Mrs Yaa Tiwaa Addo-Danquah, congratulated the graduates and urged them to infuse the knowledge and skills that they had acquired in their activities to safeguard lives and property.

“Gradually a long pending desire is being fulfilled with the graduation of students of the maiden Junior Command Course,” she noted.

Donations

As part of activities marking the graduation, the Ghana Police Church, Winneba, handed over a renovated block to the college, while the National Investment Bank and the Prudential Bank presented cheques for GH¢50, 000.00  and GH¢5,000.00 respectively, to the college. CAL Bank Limited and Zenith Bank each presented cheques for GH¢10.000 to the college.

The Inspector General of Police, Mr Mohammed Ahmed Alhassan, who spoke on behalf of the college, commended the donors for their support.
