Declare impeachment process against CJ null and void – MP tells Supreme Court
The Member of Parliament (MP) for Old Tafo, Vincent Ekow Assafuah, has filed a case at the Supreme Court seeking to halt an ongoing process that could potentially lead to the removal of the Chief Justice, Justice Gertrude Sackey Torkornoo, from office.
In a writ filed at the apex court today (Thursday, March 27, 2025), the MP is asking the Supreme Court to declare as null and void President John Dramani Mahama’s decision to forward petitions seeking the removal of the Chief Justice to the Council of State for consultation.
According to the plaintiff, the President is required by various provisions of the 1992 Constitution to first notify the Chief Justice about the petitions and obtain her comments and responses before forwarding them to the Council of State.
The writ was filed by the MP’s lawyer, Godfred Yeboah Dame, the immediate past Attorney-General (A-G).
