The conferment of the title, which came with the stool name Nii Kwatei Oko I, followed an announcement of the decision by the US-based firm to construct a 23,000 square metre Mallam Junction Mall.

The complex, which will include an entertainment facility, will be located close to the George W. Bush Motorway and the Accra-Takoradi Expressway, and would be anchored by Shoprite.

The installation took place at the Gbawe Palace in Accra last Wednesday. It was attended by representatives of BG International and elders of Gbawe.

Rationale behind the installation

Conferring the title on Mr Rose, the Chief of Gbawe, Nii Laryea Faamtite, said it was the mandate of the Gbawe stool to install any investor with the intent to enhance development activities in Gbawe and its surrounding communities.

He said after the leadership of the Gbawe stool, led by himself and other elders of the area, had carefully done all the due diligence, it came out that BG International was ready and willing to improve development activities in the town.

He expressed the hope that the project would not only transform Gbawe and its surrounding communities but also improve on the living conditions of the residents of the area.

“We understand that the project would create job opportunities for the teeming youth of the town and attract investors from all over the world,” he said.

BG International to develop Gbawe

In his acceptance speech, Mr Rose said “we believe that our project will positively enhance the lives of the Gbawe family as well as the people living in the Ga Traditional Area and other nearby districts in Accra”.

He said the project would result in a sizeable foreign direct investment (FDI) in the Ghanaian economy and when completed, it would yield significant tax revenues.

“BG International projects that more than 800 jobs will be created during the construction and over 1,000 part-time and permanent jobs created upon completion.

The Shopping Mall Project

The Chief Executive Officer of BG International, Mr Irwin Barkan, said the decision to construct the shopping mall in Ghana was, in large part, due to the dramatic growth of the consumer class in the country, adding that “Ghana’s growth in GDP rivals any country in the world and its citizens want to enjoy the benefits of modern retailing”.

According to him, the project was expected to commence this year with a projected opening in 2016, adding that the contract had been awarded to a US-based construction firm, DDG as the lead architect and Design Network Architects of Accra.
