Drivers told to avoid drink-driving

Guinness Ghana Brewery Limited (GGBL) has rewarded 129 drivers who came out successful in a six-week campaign against drink-driving. Each of the drivers received a fuel voucher worth GH¢50 as their award for committing to the campaign.

The Corporate Relations Director of Guinness Ghana Brewery Limited (GGBL), Ms Preba Ankaah Greenstreet, said the campaign, dubbed: “Twa kwano mmom”, was aimed at educating drivers on the dangers and consequences of drink-driving.

Ms Greenstreet was speaking at a ceremony at the close of the campaign in Accra yesterday. She said the initiative was part of the brewery’s commitment in support of campaigns by the National Road safety Commission (NRSC) to reduce road accidents in the country.

The campaign against drink-driving had over 2,000 commercial drivers from seven major bus terminals in the Greater Accra,  Ashanti and Central regions participating in the exercise.

Ms Greenstreet said out of 11,000 Breath Alcohol Concentration (BAC) tests conducted between the fourth and sixth week of the campaign, there was no driver tested above 0.08 per cent, which meant their BAC levels were on the average.

She said that meant that drivers had become more responsible and were not engaged in excessive intake of alcohol.

“Throughout the campaign, drivers were made aware of the negative effects of drink-driving and they have pledged to not engage in alcoholism,” she said.

She commended the drivers for taking a bold step to decide to reduce their alcoholic intake during their working hours.

Precautions

The Greater Accra Regional Director of the National Road Safety Commission (NRSC), Mr Daniel Wuaku, urged commuters and pedestrians to take responsibility for their safety.

He said although the NRSC had the responsibility of educating the public on road safety measures, it was also the responsibility of individuals to play their part and make sure they stayed safe.

“Both commuters and pedestrians have a role to play. We all have to take charge of our lives and contribute to ensure that accidents were reduced, if not totally eradicated,” he said.

According to him, it is the duty of the police to enforce laws on the road after the NRSC has educated the public on safety rules. He said the NRSC, together with the police, would deploy personnel on roads across the country as part of efforts to ensure safety on.

He said the country recorded 1,856 deaths through road accidents and 360 of the number were recorded in the Greater Accra Region. The figure, he said, showed a reduction in last year’s record of 416, which is an improvement on road safety.

‘Twa kwano mmom’ was a road safety campaign initiated by the GGBL and was launched on December 8, 2014 with support from the NRSC. The campaign was targeted at educating drivers to make them aware of the risks involved in drink-driving.
