The Electoral Commission (EC) has set Tuesday, September 2, 2025, as the date for the Akwatia constituency parliamentary by-election following the death of the Member of Parliament for the area, Ernest Kumi.
In a statement issued Wednesday, July 30, the Commission said the vacancy created by Mr Kumi’s passing requires, under Article 112(5) of the 1992 Constitution, that a by-election be conducted within 60 days.
Nomination forms will be available for download on the Commission’s website from July 30 to August 13.
Completed forms must be submitted at the Demkyembour District Office of the EC between Monday, August 11 and Wednesday, August 13.
Submissions will be accepted from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. and from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. each day.
Each candidate’s nomination must be supported by a proposer, a seconder and 18 registered voters from the constituency.
Aspirants are also required to provide two recent postcard-sized photographs and must submit four copies of the completed forms.
The filing fee has been set at GH¢10,000 for male candidates.
Female aspirants and persons with disabilities will pay a reduced fee of GH¢7,500.
Mrs Jean Mensa, Chairperson of the EC, urged all prospective candidates and stakeholders to adhere to the timelines and requirements outlined for the by-election.
