‘Extend assistance to prisoners too’

The Headmistress of the Light of the World School Complex, Mrs Esther Hamilton, has urged society to not neglect people in prison but rather give them the needed attention and care to encourage them to reform.

She stated that “prisoners should not be treated as if they have an infectious disease. They must be supported through philanthropy, run particularly by religious bodies, non-governmental organisations and other groups.

“Jesus Christ said he came not for the upright but for the sinner. That is the reason why we have to take care of them even though they have sinned. A number of organisations and individuals have disregarded prisoners and rather treat them as if  they are victims of the Ebola disease.”

Event

Mrs Hamilton made the call when she feted inmates of the Awutu Prisons Camp at Awutu Bereku in the Central Region on New Year’s Day.

The occasion was interspersed with singing and dancing as the inmates were treated to good food and soft drinks.

Mrs Hamilton expressed her regret that for lack of legal representation in court, some people were found guilty and as such found themselves in prison.

Prisoners

She encouraged the inmates to not be disheartened by their stay in prison but rather use the opportunity to acquire employable skills which they could apply to make a living upon their release.

“You are going through a difficult process in your lives and this should transform you to come out as better persons. Jesus went through difficulty and pain to save mankind,” she said.

Mrs Hamilton, who supports the inmates every Christmas and Easter, pledged her continued support to the prison.

She stated: “It is my conviction that no one should condemn prisoners because just as the Bible says, we are all sinners and have fallen short of the glory of God.”
