She said the hospital needed support to enable it to meet the growing demand for quality healthcare for the teeming patients who utilise the facility daily.

According to the First Lady, the hospital had laudable plans to expand some essential facilities particularly the pharmacy, X-ray and laboratory departments as it prepared to celebrate the 90th year of establishment next year.

Annual party

Mrs Mahama made the call at the annual Children’s Christmas party of the hospital in Accra on Thursday.

The party, sponsored by the Royal Bank and others, was attended by children on admission and others from orphanages and selected schools in the community.

The Lordina Foundation also donated rice, sugar, milk, milo, cooking oils, assorted biscuits, sweets, canned drinks, clothes and chocolate.

Most special event

Mrs Mahama said the Children’s Hospital Christmas party was one of the most special event on her calendar as it gave her the opportunity to share the special season with the children.

She said Christmas symbolised God’s love for mankind and as humans, it was also a season for sharing and showing love for one another.

The First Lady, therefore, called on Ghanaians to show love and compassion to children, especially the vulnerable this festive occasion.

She said children were precious and the season offered the opportunity to parents, guardians and all people to put smiles on the faces of the children.

The First Lady said as a mother, she saw it as the most heart wrenching experience when her children fell sick and that was a trying moment for every mother.

“So for me, it is a special moment to be spending time and putting smiles on the faces of this little children who are ill of one condition or another”, she said.

Appreciation

Mrs Mahama expressed her appreciation to Rev. Father Andrew Campbell for his immense contributions towards the development of the hospital and for putting smiles on the faces of the less-privileged in society.

She also thanked the organisers of the party, corporate sponsors, especially the Royal Bank and others who, in diverse ways, had shown their kindness and generosity by bringing joy to the children of the hospital and other orphanages.

The Chinese Ambassador to Ghana, Mr Sun Baohong, also presented a TV set, a washing machine and detergents valued at GH¢ 5,000 to the hospital.

Rev. Father Campbell urged parents to take advantage of the Yuletide and spend quality time with their children.

The Medical Superintendent of the hospital, Dr Eric Sifah, said the main challenge of the hospital was the inadequate number of doctors, a situation which has existed for many years and affects the delivery of quality health care in the hospital.
