The Eastern South Regional Police Command has arrested four people after some youth opened fire and injured six others in an attempt to stop a family from burying their dead in the royal cemetery at Asamankese on Sunday, October 26, 2025.
According to the police, the youth blocked sections of the road at the Asamankese–Akroso junction and around the chief’s palace, firing shots indiscriminately.
They allegedly claimed that the bereaved family intended to bury their six deceased relatives in the royal cemetery.
Six people sustained gunshot wounds during the incident. They have been named as David Odame, 28, Musah Gyakweli, 29, Patrick Ofosu, Emmanuel Obeng, 18, Asamoah Sey, 18, and one other person yet to be identified.
Three police officers were also injured during the violence.
A police statement issued on Monday, October 27, 2025, said the command had earlier received intelligence that some individuals were transporting guns and cartridges into a room near the chief’s palace.
Officers were immediately dispatched to the scene, where they arrested suspects and retrieved one single-barrel gun, 84 live AAA cartridges, seven cutlasses, and two knives.
The suspects were identified as Isaac Ntim Nana Yaw Zenyo, Bismark K. K. Adam, 29, and Buaben Richard, 25.
The statement added that shortly after the arrests, some agitated youth attacked the police with stones and other objects, injuring three officers on their heads and hands.
The attackers also damaged the windscreen and side glass of two police vehicles.
All injured persons are receiving treatment at the Asamankese Government Hospital, while the suspects remain in police custody to assist with investigations.
The police said the situation has since been brought under control, and the Asamankese township is calm. Patrols and surveillance have been increased to maintain peace and order in the area.
“The public is assured of security arrangements in place to protect life and property so that residents can go about their normal activities,” the statement signed by Deputy Superintendent of Police David Fianko-Okyere, Head of the Public Affairs Unit for the Eastern South Region, stated.
