This is to enable them to participate effectively and also track development projects by their local district assemblies to ensure value for money.

The participants were drawn from the Yendi municipality and the Kumbungu, Zabzugu, Savelugu/Nanton and Nanumba North districts.

The project, which is supported by the European Union, is aimed at fostering good working relationships between district assemblies and local communities.

It is being implemented in some selected districts in the Northern, Upper East, Upper West and Volta regions.

Objective

The Director of Friends of the Earth Ghana, Dr Theo Anderson, explained that the primary objective of the engagements was to strengthen and equip civil society groups and people in the communities with basic knowledge to enable them to develop interest in the governance system and ensure proper monitoring and evaluation of programmes, especially in the area of service delivery, by the assemblies.

He urged the participants to put the knowledge acquired to proper use by demanding their rights and also exercising their responsibility in accessing basic public services in their communities.

Dr Anderson said due to resource constraints, the NGO was working in some few districts in the country, adding, “We intend to include more districts in future.”

Commendation

A participant, Ayishetu Imoro, in an interview with the Daily Graphic, commended the organisers for empowering her to enable her to participate in the governance system to help improve on the lives of her people.

‘’I am thankful to Friends of the Earth and I promise to use the knowledge and skills gained to change the mindset of my fellow women in my area about the workings of the local governance system,’’ she stated.
