According to the workers, land-guards have taken over lands belonging to the GCAA making it difficult for the Authority to install air traffic equipment costing about 600,000 euros at La – Nkwantanang near Adenta.

According to the Air Traffic Controller at the GCAA, Mr William Amoako, on June 20, the workers sent a press release notifying the public about the presence of land guards on the land but authorities did nothing about the threatening encroachment.

Mr Amoako however said the first phase of the strike action would affect the services of the GCAA from the audit and finance where there would be no issuance of some cheques, no circulation of domestic NOTAM and flight plans as well no transport service to pick and drop staff.

“We were supposed to install our HF equipment as well as other equipment but unfortunately we cannot get access to the place. It’s been encroached upon and we have made several appeals to the Ministry of Transport as well as our managements to secure our lands for us but they have all fallen on death ears”, Mr Amoako said.

“Our inability to install the HF equipment, as well as other navigational equipment at the site, will have a dire consequence on aviation safety in Accra airspace. The control of aircraft over the Oceanic is seriously being hampered by this unfortunate situation”, he added.

According to him, the strike action would be internal to put pressure on the government officials to act swiftly on the disturbing situation.

He therefore said that, if the situation was not averted in the next three days, workers of the terminal would extend the strike action.
