‎Ghana Maritime Authority cautions against use of fishing vessels for passenger transport

‎The Ghana Maritime Authority (GMA) has urged residents and community leaders in coastal and riverine areas to support the Authority's campaign for safe water transport and adherence to regulations.

‎‎The GMA in a statement issued on November 7, 2025, expressed deep concern over a video shared on social media showing market women being ferried to the Anyanui market in the Volta Region aboard a fishing canoe.

‎The GMA condemned the act as a blatant violation of maritime safety regulations and a dangerous disregard for human life.

‎The GMA  described the incident as particularly disturbing, especially in the wake of a recent canoe disaster in the Oti Region that claimed 16 lives.

‎The Authority stressed that fishing vessels were certified solely for fishing operations and must not be used to transport passengers or for any other commercial activity.

‎The GMA reminded the public that wearing certified life jackets was mandatory for all persons travelling on Ghana’s waterways, irrespective of the distance.

‎It said it has intensified efforts to enforce safety protocols and ensure compliance across all coastal and inland water routes.

‎“The GMA remains committed to improving safety standards on all Ghanaian waters. We call on the public to cooperate with us in ensuring safe and compliant water transport,” the statement concluded.
