2024 GJA Awards: Asediba tops all

TV3's Godwin Asediba has been adjudged the 2024 GJA Journalist of the Year, a recognition that crowns a year of outstanding dedication and accomplishment in his field.

Mr Asediba, who also won the Best Television Documentary Award at last Saturday’s ceremony in Kumasi—the first to be held outside Accra—is an investigative journalist whose body of work include ground-breaking investigations into child labour, educational inequality, human trafficking, and weaknesses in public healthcare.

The Graphic Communications Group Ltd (GCGL), Ghana’s media standard-bearer, made an impressive showing at the event, winning five awards on the day of glitz, glamour, pomp.  The historic ceremony, held at the Manhyia Palace in Kumasi, brought together journalists from across the country to celebrate excellence in the profession.

A journalist with the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC), Doreen Ampofo, emerged as the Best Female Journalist of the Year after bagging two other awards.

Ms Ampofo won the Best Radio Documentary and Best Gender Reporting categories before picking up the Female Journalist of the Year Award.

The ceremony honoured 38 outstanding individuals, media programmes, and organisations for their exceptional performance in 2024.

The 29-year-old Asediba, who recently won the 2025 BBC News Komla Dumor Award, was unable to attend the 29th GJA Awards in person, as he is currently undertaking an internship with the BBC in London as part of the BBC award.

The citation in his honour highlighted how Mr Asediba often focused on human-interest stories, aiming to expose injustice and amplify the voices of marginalised communities.

In a speech delivered on his behalf by his colleague, Edward Kwanning, Mr Asediba said he was deeply humbled to be name the Journalist of the Year.

He dedicated the award to all journalists who continue to choose courage over comfort, using their storytelling to advance the cause of the vulnerable and drive community development.

He called for stronger protection for journalists in the discharge of their professional responsibilities, stressing that “ a free press in every society must be protected in practice, not just by the law”.
