58 Manhyia South residents sponsored for free cataract surgery

The Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) has begun performing eye surgical operations for some 58 residents of the Manhyia South Constituency to correct defects in their sight.

The operation is being sponsored by Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah, the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) Parliamentary aspirant for Manhyia South, in the Ashanti Region.

The beneficiaries were identified at a free medical  outreach organised in the constituency by the aspirant  in collaboration with the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital and Clarion Medical Centre.

The patrons underwent thorough medical checks, including  eye test and breast cancer screening.

Rationale

Mr Awuah, who is seeking to succeed Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh, the running mate of the NPP flag bearer,  also took the opportunity to interact with the electorate, highlighting some of his policies and aspirations for the people when elected.

He explained the rationale for the screening and the free eye care service for the residents, who included elderly men and women.

"From my house-to-house engagements in the constituency, I noticed that almost every house I went to, there was at least one person with cataract.

"Therefore, in undertaking a general health screening, we also decided to undertake eye examination for the residents of Manhyia South Constituency," Mr Awuah explained.

Gratitude

Some beneficiaries thanked Mr Awuah for supporting the initiative and called on other electorate to give him the nod in the December polls.

Maame Malley, a resident, who attended to her mother at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital, thanked the parliamentary aspirant and the medical service providers for the intervention.

“Ideally, I should have paid GH¢3,000 for the surgery but I was told the cost had been absorbed. I wish to express gratitude to our incoming MP for the good work he has begun,” she stated.

“I know he will do more when he wins the seat and I urge all voters in the constituency to turn up and vote massively for Mr Awuah,” she said.
