ASA plants 3,100 trees with 7 institutions

Microfinance institution ASA Savings and Loans company has undertaken its annual environmental sustainability exercise, planting 3,100 trees across selected institutions.

Last Monday, officials of ASA Savings and Loans joined staff and students of the College of Community Health Nurses at Winneba in the Central Region to plant 200 trees.

The team lead from ASA Savings and Loans, Richard Nartey, who is the Sustainability Manager of the company, said the tree planting initiative was a step towards environmental sustainability and a commitment in solidarity with the tree for life initiative.

The variety of seedlings planted included coconut, guava, orange, mango, lavender tree, militia, cinnamon, and weeping willow.

He said ASA targeted planting 3,000 tree seedlings this year but was able to plant 3,100 tree seedlings.

This, he said, was made possible through partnerships with the Oyoko Methodist SHS, Nsawam Prisons, Kwadaso College of Agriculture, Odomaseman SHS, Bibiani Secondary Technical, Wesley High School, Bekwai and Effiduase Secondary Commercial school.

Restoring vegetation

Mr Nartey said the restoration of the country’s vegetative cover by planting and nurturing trees was crucial for sustainable growth, reduction in greenhouse gas emissions and supporting community livelihoods.

"There is a deliberate plan to involve students in this exercise so as to increase environmental awareness among the teeming youth.”

“Trees play a vital role in maintaining a healthy ecosystem, providing habitat for a diverse range of species, and serving as a natural barrier against storms and erosion and we need the youth to be aware and join the campaign to re-green Ghana,” he stated.

He indicated that by participating in this year’s tree planting exercise, ASA was demonstrating its commitment to ecosystem restoration and climate resilience.

Environmental sustainability

"ASA looks forward to making a meaningful contribution to environmental sustainability," he added.

The Principal of the college, Hannah Yawson, who took part in the exercise, showed appreciation for ASA’s role in making the exercise a success.

She gave the assurance that the school would ensure that the seedlings grow to serve their intended purpose.
