Mfantsipim anniversary committee launches 150th awards

The Mfantsipim School 150th Anniversary Planning Committee has launched its awards and fundraising dinner to honour individuals and institutions that have contributed in various ways to the growth of the institution, second-cycle education and national development.

The awards ceremony and dinner gala are scheduled for October 31 this year at the La Palm Royal Beach Hotel in Accra as part of the school’s sesquicentennial celebrations.

The initiative is also expected to support key legacy projects under the anniversary celebrations.

Recognition

Addressing the media at the launch in Accra, the Chairman of the Mfantsipim 150th Anniversary Planning Committee, Capt. John B. Yamoah, said beyond recognising achievement and service, the initiative sought to preserve and promote the core values that had defined the school for the past 150 years, including leadership, discipline, integrity, excellence and commitment to nation-building.

“The awards will also serve as an inspiration to the current crop of students to strive for greater heights,” he said.

Capt. Yamoah explained that the launch also offered the opportunity to present the various award categories, eligibility requirements, nomination procedures and selection process to stakeholders and the public.

He said the planning committee remained committed to ensuring that the awards scheme was conducted with the highest standards of credibility, transparency, fairness and integrity.

Categories

The Chairman of the Mfantsipim 150th Anniversary Awards Sub-Committee, Prof. David Ofori-Adjei, said the awards had been grouped into four broad categories — distinguished and emerging, education, pan-industry and MOBA Special.

He explained that the distinguished and emerging categories would honour exceptional old boys and emerging leaders who continued to uphold the values of the school.

The education category would recognise teaching and non-teaching staff, as well as individuals who had made significant contributions to secondary education in the country.

The pan-industry category would celebrate achievements in fields such as science, technology and innovation, environmental sustainability, sports, media and communication, as well as organisations that had partnered Mfantsipim and contributed to its development.

The MOBA Special Category would recognise old boys and institutions that had promoted the values, reputation and vision of the school both locally and internationally.

Prof. Ofori-Adjei said a total of 16 award categories had been developed, with detailed eligibility and evaluation criteria available to the public.

Prof. Ofori-Adjei called on old boys, year groups, chapters of the Mfantsipim Old Boys Association (MOBA), stakeholders and members of the public to actively participate in the nomination process.

He added that the nomination process would be followed by an independent evaluation and selection exercise before the awards ceremony in October.

He also expressed appreciation to PricewaterhouseCoopers Ghana (PwC Ghana) for agreeing to independently oversee the evaluation process and determine the eventual winners on a pro bono basis.

Celebration

A statement issued by the committee said the awards and fundraising dinner would be one of the major highlights of the sesquicentennial celebrations.

“We are excited to celebrate this significant milestone and honour those who have made meaningful contributions to Mfantsipim School and the broader community,” Prof. Ofori-Adjei said.

“This celebration is not just about the past; it is also about looking forward and inspiring future generations to continue the legacy of excellence,” he added.
