School pupils educated on gender-based violence

The Zonta Club of Accra II has sensitised school pupils of the Abelemkpe Cluster of Schools to gender-based violence.

The initiative, which is part of this year’s 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence is in line with Zonta's global effort to raise awareness about gender-based violence that affects women and children.

The activism began on November 25 and runs through to December 10.

During this period, the Zonta Club aimed to educate young pupils about gender-based violence and its impact, emphasising the need to equip children with knowledge and tools to protect themselves in such situations.

In her speech, the president of the Zonta Club of Accra II, Merley Wood, highlighted the organisation's commitment to creating a better world for women and girls.

She emphasised that educating the youth was crucial because incidents of gender-based violence could disrupt their growth and hinder their ability to reach their full potential.

“We also want them to reach their full potential because we know that when this happens, it disrupts all sorts of things, so many things happen and they are not able to reach their full potential,” she said.

She encouraged the pupils to be aware of these issues and to stand against violence in their communities.

Gratitude

The Headmaster of the school, Oko Afari Yeboa, expressed gratitude to Zonta Club Accra II for their continued support, referencing past initiatives such as scholarships awarded to needy, brilliant girls in the school.

He further urged the pupils to study hard and be beneficiaries of the scholarship programme.

“They give scholarships to needy, brilliant students, and normally the recommendation comes from the school.

The school will recommend that this girl is very good but needy. We will commend you to them and then the scholarship may be extended to you,” he said.
