Single track SHS students back in school today
Students in single track senior high schools (SHSs) are returning to school today, April 23, 2025.
Form Two students who came home for the Easter break reported to school yesterday.
The single track students were initially due to report to school on March 29, 2025, but the Ghana Education Service (GES) had to reschedule the reopening date.
Schools have been on break since March 4, 2025 and were expected to resume on March 29, 2025, however, due to the two-day public holidays for the Eid-Ul-Fitr which come immediately after Ramadan, the reopening date was rescheduled.
Ministry
The Ministry of the Interior had informed the public that Sunday, March 30, 2025 and Monday, March 31, 2025 marked Eid-Ul-Fitr, a statutory public holiday.
“However, since March 30, 2025 falls on a Sunday and in the interest of the public, the President of the Republic of Ghana, has by Executive Instrument, in accordance with Section 2 of the Public Holidays and Commemorative Days Act (Act 601) declared Monday, March 31, 2025 and Tuesday, April 1, 2025 as additional public holidays and should be observed as such throughout the country,” it said.
Consequently, the GES announced the rescheduling of the reopening date, as confirmed by its public relations unit.
The head of the PR Unit, Cassandra Twum-Ampofo, confirming the rescheduling of the reopening date from March 29, 2025, to April 23, 2025, explained that since Monday and Tuesday had been declared as statutory holidays, coupled with the break for Easter celebrations from April 18-21, 2025, it would not be prudent to let students travel back and forth due to the risks.
“In order not to have breaks and to ensure a smooth instructional period, management decided that we shift the calendar,” she said.
Instructional period
Ms Twum Ampofo said there would be intervention for the students, especially those in final-year preparing for the 2025 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).
She said there was always an instructional hour added to make up for breaks of such nature.
Resumption
Yesterday, the Daily Graphic observed that a number of the Form Two students were returning to school, with some travelling in organised transportation to particularly the Cape Coast schools.
School managements had also circulated reminders about the reopening on the parents WhatsApp platforms.
