UCC Brethren Alumni Club installs solar powered streetlights at UCC
A network of University of Cape Coast alumni, UCC Brethren, has presented 10 installed solar-powered street lights to the university to light up the technology village avenue.
The avenue stretches from the SRC hostels to the lecture theatres and the lights are to help enhance safety on campus.
The UCC Brethren visited the campus to commission and hand over the project to the university community, and used the opportunity to engage students in a Career Guidance and Mentorship Seminar, dubbed “Up-Close Alumni”.
The President of the group, Sebastian Kleman Asem, on behalf of members, said the donation was their contribution towards security and a safe environment for students and the university community at large.
He called on the management of UCC to ensure regular maintenance of the lights.
Gratitude
The acting Director of Academic Affairs, UCC, Dr Atta Yeboah-Sarpong, who received the donation on behalf of the Registrar of UCC, Enoch Gideon Abbeyquaye, expressed the university’s gratitude to the group for the exemplary gesture.
He said the street lights would be very beneficial to the students, enabling them to go about their academic activities safely at night.
Dr Yeboah-Sarpong commended the group for giving back to their alma mater, and called on other alumni groups to emulate their example.
He underscored the importance of alumni associations to the growth of every tertiary institution and expressed the hope that the group would be remembered anytime humanity and philanthropy were mentioned.
The Dean of Students, Professor Daniel Apaak, thanked the UCC Brethren Group and added that the university continued to seek the support of all alumni and well-meaning individuals to advance its cause.
The Interim President of the UCC Students’ Representative Council, Vincent Kojo Siabi, for his part, described the donation as timely, saying it would improve security for students and staff of the university.
Career guidance
The Career Guidance and Mentorship Seminar had keynote speakers who are members of the group.
They included Dr Kwamena Minta Nyarko, the Member of Parliament (MP) for Cape Coast North, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Encomm Power Solutions, Kweku Frempong, and the CEO of Vihama Energy Ltd, Mr Asem, who addressed the topics: marketable skills; what I wish I knew back at the university; and trust & attitude at the workplace.
The Events and Programmes Chairman of the UCC Brethren Alumni Club, Frank Kofi Ayivor, told newsmen that the group invested a little over GH¢120,000 to install the solar-powered street lights.
He added that it was the second time the group had organised such a mentorship seminar for the students in collaboration with the Students Representative Council and Alumni Relations Secretariat.
Mr Ayivor said it was their way of giving back to the university that equipped them with knowledge to stand on their own two feet today.
