World Vision supports Zini camp children with dental items

World Vision Ghana (WVG), an international Christian humanitarian organisation, has, in collaboration with Unilever Ghana, presented dental care items to the refugees at the Zini refugee camp in the Sissala West District in the Upper West Region.

The items donated included toothpastes and toothbrushes as part of efforts to promote quality health care and hygiene among the children at the camp.

Presenting the items, the Northern Sector Operations Manager of WVG, Rexford Bugre, said his organisation had collaborated with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) to deliver essential services such as water, sanitation infrastructure to improve and enhance hygiene practices at the camp.

He said WVG was particular about the health conditions of the refugees at the camp, and it was for that reason that it collaborated with other organisations to extend health services to the people to ensure their overall well-being.

He encouraged health workers to maintain a consistent presence at the camp and to support ongoing health practices.

Hygiene

A community health worker at the camp, Patience Naabie-ru, said the donation would go a long way to promote good hygiene and minimise oral health issues among children at the camp.

She said oral health care was crucial for building confidence and promoting overall well-being, adding that good oral health would boost productivity and allow them to work efficiently and effectively.

"Some children were observed spitting out blood, indicating poor oral hygiene and highlighting the need for proper dental care," she stated.

Ms Naabie-ru encouraged parents to monitor their children's oral hygiene, emphasising the importance of a consistent habit of brushing the teeth.

Commendation

The Upper West Regional Coordinator of the Ghana Refugee Board, Joseph Aniah, was grateful to the community leaders for allowing the refugees to integrate into the society and for taking part in community activities.

He said it was not enough to provide refugees with safe spaces to live, but it was also important to provide them with opportunities to thrive.

He indicated that empowering refugees economically through vocational training, financial inclusion, and skills development would allow them to positively impact their host communities.
