The technical committee would  provide technical support to the steering committee and ensure the full implementation of the GSDP within the stipulated period.

The steering committee would also, among other things, provide overall policy guidance and advice to ensure the smooth and speedy implementation of the GSDP, as well as ensure that project activities were executed in a timely and cost-effective manner.

Background of GSDP

Briefing the Daily Graphic about the GSDP, the Project Co-ordinator, Mr Sylvester Gyamfi, said a strategic plan developed in 2009 by the department and nine other government agencies to develop statistics in Ghana led to the GSDP.

The World Bank, he said, provided  assistance of a $30-million loan and an additional $10 million was secured as grant from the Statistics for Result Facility-Catalytic Fund from the governments of UK and The Netherlands.

In his remarks before the inauguration, a Deputy Minister of Finance and Economic Planning, Mr Cassiel Ato Forson, underscored the importance of statistics in the country.

He indicated that there was the need for an efficient national statistical system to produce timely, reliable and accurate statistics to help policy formulation, decision making and monitoring and evaluation of development programmes.

While admitting that the responsibilities of the committees were challenging, Mr Forson charged them to do their utmost best to ensure the success of the entire project.

“I want to charge you to consult widely and bring all your rich experiences to bear on this project to help achieve the objectives set out,” he added.
