Golden Tulip unionised staff petition President Mahama

Unionised staff of the Golden Tulip Hotel in Accra have petitioned President John Mahama to, as a matter of urgency, change the management of the hotel to forestall its imminent collapse.

Apart from salvaging the image of the hotel, the union said a change of management would also save the country from financial losses.

The union accused the management of procuring inferior items for the hotel and also refusing to provide the hotel with the requisite and acceptable beddings. They also alleged that there were leakages in hotel rooms.

The petition, signed by the Chairman of the union, Mr Thomas Mingle and other members of the executive, said when guests encountered such situations,  they usually do not vented their anger on management members but the “innocent” workers. He added that management had not taken any steps to address those concerns.

Management, it said, had turned the hotel into a money-making venture for themselves, while the ordinary worker was treated unfairly.

“The members of the management team are paid travel allowances of $11,000, together with plane tickets for spouse and four children and also take GH¢30,000 allowances each bi-annually. Junior managers are also paid bi-annual allowances ranging from GH¢14,500 to GH¢17,500, while members of the unionised staff retire on a paltry package”, it alleged.

The petition said management had moved their current salaries off the company’s payroll system in order to hide their big salaries away from workers.

Accusing management of discrimination, the union said, “ the workers have been pinned to their grades for a long time without promotion, thus putting them on the same salary scale for the rest of their working years”.

Employees with the requisite qualification had been denied promotion to the various vacant positions and appeals to management had been in vain, it added.

Workers, the union said, were dissatisfied with the medical scheme, salary structure and scholarship instituted for workers, saying those benefits were skewed to the advantage of management.

The petition also mentioned management hiring thugs to brutalise union leaders who were saved by the intervention of the assistant commander of the Airport Police.

The union claimed the intention of management was to “loot and share,” saying as patriotic Ghanaians who had the welfare of the country at heart, the union would not sit down for a selected few to milk national resources for personal gain.

“It is in this direction that we decided to petition your office for action to be taken against these saboteurs who want to ditch your administration,” the union added.
