The project, being executed through the Ministry of Power, is meant to correct faults and defects that occurred when Agona Swedru and its environs were hit by floods on June 20, 2010.

The Member of Parliament (MP) for Agona West, Mr Charles Obeng-Inkoom, who facilitated the project, said its objective was to ensure that power was fully restored to the community to enhance the economic and other activities of the people.

2010 Floods

The MP said the 2010 floods destroyed properties worth millions of Ghana Cedis, including electricity poles carrying power to the community.

He said though power was later restored to the area, the residents experienced low voltage, which affected their daily activities compelling most of them to use stabilisers in their respective homes and workplaces.

“In some cases the poor electricity supply forced some residents to relocate to other areas to engage in their daily activities,” the MP said.

Mr Obeng-Inkoom said this when he paid a visit to Sabon Zongo to inspect the progress of work and to impress upon the contractor to expedite work towards early completion of the project.

Progress of work

He said the work was expected to be completed within two months to improve energy supply to the community. According to the MP, the project, when completed, would ensure reliable power supply to the community, which has experienced intermittent power for the past five years.

He said a 100KVA transformer would be allocated to the community to fully restore power to the area, stressing that ‘’irregular power to the area would be a thing of the past once the project is completed’’.

Mr Obeng-Inkoom added that “unfortunately some houses had since 2010 had no light, which has greatly affected the lives of the affected people.”

''The government is committed to extending electricity to communities in the municipality without electricity as a way of opening up such areas.''

Akora River drainage project

He mentioned that the government, after the 2010 floods, began the dredging of the Akora River to forestall the recurrence of the unfortunate incident.

According to the MP, the project was progressing steadily and that when completed a large area would be made available for the river to flow easily anytime there was heavy rainfall.

The Sabon Zongo community leaders thanked the MP and the government for the efforts to improve the lives of the people. “We support the efforts to raise our standard of living,” they said.

A resident of the community and tutor of the Swedru School of Business, Mr Faisal Abdallah, also thanked the government and Mr Obeng-Inkoom for the project, expressing the hope that upon its completion power supply to the area would be stable.
