Nigeria and Tunisia ooze confidence ahead of high-stakes Group C showdown

Nigeria and Tunisia face off in a pivotal Group C encounter at the Complexe Sportif de Fès on Friday at 21:00 local time (20:00 GMT).

Both sides come into the clash with maximum points from their opening matches at the TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations Morocco 2025, after Nigeria edged Tanzania 2–1 and Tunisia overcame Uganda 3–1.

With early qualification for the knockout stage at stake, the fixture promises intensity as both teams seek to build on their winning starts.

Nigeria midfielder Wilfred Ndidi spoke confidently about his side’s mindset ahead of the showdown.

“There is no pressure on us — none at all. We didn’t qualify for the World Cup, but we are ready for this tournament. This competition gives us another chance to put things right. The players are ready, the team is ready, the manager is ready, and everyone around the group is fully prepared,” he said.

Reflecting on recent disappointment, Ndidi added: “What we went through during the World Cup qualifiers was painful. Exiting in that way hurt, but now we are fully focused.

This tournament gives us a real opportunity to achieve something, and we are determined to make the most of it.”

He also highlighted the responsibility the team carries. “We are here to represent all Nigerians, wherever they are in the world, and we are grateful for their support.

Football affects the mood of the nation. When we win, people are happy, and we understand that responsibility. For now, we are concentrating on the positives and maintaining the right mindset.”

Tunisian defender Montassar Talbi, meanwhile, stressed the need for unity and discipline.

“When we play against big teams, we always give our best. We have faced strong opponents before and performed well. To win this game, we must trust ourselves, stay united, and give everything. Discipline and concentration will be key, and we must approach this match as if it were our first.”

What they said

Eric Chelle – Nigeria head coach:
“Tunisia are a big team with a strong identity and a solid World Cup qualifying campaign behind them. They play good football and started this tournament very well. But we also have a good team and we are improving with every match. We may allow Tunisia to have the ball and play directly when we win it back, or we may stick to our philosophy. There is no pressure on us — this tournament is an opportunity to correct what went wrong and continue building our identity.”

Sami Trabelsi – Tunisia head coach:
“In our last match, there was not much expression because playing with only organised attack and defence can limit some players. Nigeria are strong both offensively and defensively, so everyone must contribute, not just the defenders. We are focused only on the pitch — social media and past results will not affect us. Hazem is fit and improving in training. Every team has weak points, and we have studied Nigeria’s. To go far in this tournament, you must beat the big teams.”

Historical context
Nigeria and Tunisia share a long-standing rivalry, having met 21 times in all competitions. Nigeria have recorded five wins, Tunisia six, with 10 draws. In AFCON finals, Nigeria hold a slight edge with three victories to Tunisia’s one, while two meetings were decided on penalties. Their most recent encounter came in the 2021 round of 16, where Tunisia claimed a 1–0 win courtesy of a Youssef Msakni goal.

Key statistics and players to watch
Nigeria head into the clash unbeaten in their last seven AFCON group matches and have scored in 13 of their last 14 games at the tournament, underlining their attacking consistency. Tunisia, meanwhile, are buoyed by a strong start to Morocco 2025 and recent success in group-stage fixtures.

Ademola Lookman is expected to be central to Nigeria’s attacking threat, with the forward in impressive form during AFCON qualifiers, offering pace, creativity and the potential for decisive contributions. With both sides eager to assert dominance, Friday’s high-stakes encounter could prove decisive in shaping Group C.
