Health Minister appeals to mining companies to takeover and complete Agenda 111 hospitals

The Minister of Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh has appealed to mining companies to take over, complete and equip the Agenda 111 hospital projects in their operational areas.

He said the mining companies should work with the government to operate the facilities.

Speaking at a press briefing in Accra on Monday [Dec 1, 2025], Mr Akandoh said the strategy was to ensure that many of the stalled hospital projects were completed.

"Wherever we have Agenda 111 hospitals that are uncompleted, and there is a mining company there, we are encouraging them to take over, complete it, equip it, and partner with the government to run it," he said.

Mr Akandoh said targeting mining firms represents a specific implementation of the broader partnership strategy, focusing on companies in resource-rich areas.

He cited existing examples of corporate involvement in healthcare, noting that the Maritime and the Bank of Ghana hospitals are examples.

"There are other corporate bodies with hospitals. There is nothing wrong with it," he said, adding that the Ministry wants private sector involvement beyond mining companies.

The Minister said the government would not abandon any Agenda 111 project. While some completions will be funded directly by the government, private sector participation will serve as a complementary approach.

"Apart from the government's direct allocation to completing some of them, we are also going to involve the private sector," he explained.

The Agenda 111 project, launched by former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo in August 2021, aims to build 101 district hospitals, six regional hospitals in new regions, and two psychiatric hospitals.
