He said, for instance, what to do with the garbage that was created daily, especially in the cities, should be of prime concern to the country's engineers and scientists.

President Mahama was speaking when a delegation from the Ghana Academy of Arts and Sciences (GAAS), led by its President, Professor Akilagpa Sawyerr, called on him at the Flagstaff House yesterday.

Newly elected council members of the GAAS were introduced to the President at the meeting. The association also presented a report on the progress of work on its office complex, which is being funded by the government, to him.

Flooding

President Mahama touched on the perennial flooding in Accra and some parts of the country and urged the academy to proffer a solution to that problem too. He further called for serious attention to be given to appropriate engineering that would solve the housing problem.

"The best brains we have in the academy need to think through to resolve some of these things," he said.

He added that the disconnect between government officials and the academy must be bridged, in the interest of the nation.

President Mahama gave an assurance that the government would continue to make funds available for the construction of the academy' s office.

Research Fund

The President said the government was in the process of setting up the National Research Fund.

Institutions to benefit from the fund when it becomes operational include the GAAS.

He commended the academy for the good work it was doing but expressed concern about the way political party representatives were made to take over radio discussions on every issue, including those that were technical and were beyond them.

It was his contention that issues that were technical should be left for the experts to deal with.

Prof. Sawyerr

Prof. Sawyerr outlined some activities that were being undertaken by the academy and said the institution would continue to seek the government's support for them.
