The President who yesterday described the allegations as “baseless”, in his recent comments explained that, he was never under the illusion that the vehicle was a gift to the state.

According to him, he does not even like American cars, rather Japanese cars.

“In any case, I don’t use Ford. I don’t like American cars. I like Japanese cars. Toyota is my car,” the President said at a meeting with the clergy at the Flagstaff House on Thursday.

President Mahama further dismissed allegations of corruption against him, saying, “This anecdotal shouting about corruption as if corruption has exploded under a particular government because we want to gain political traction is not on…”

The President has recently come under criticisms for accepting the car gift worth about US$100,000 from the Burkinabe contractor, Djibril Kanazoe.

According to a Joy FM report, Mr Kanazoe was subsequently awarded a contract from the state.

But in explaining, President Mahama said, “If Brazil gives you money or China gives you money, they don’t expect that you’ll take their money and give the contract to a Brazilian contractor. And so there are some circumstances where sole sourcing is allowed under the law. But then, I have given the directive and that directive is being implemented that every sole sourcing contract must be subjected to value for money.”

The President also noted that he was awaiting the conclusions of a petition filed at the Commission for Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ), after which he would give an appropriate response.
