Tutu Methodist JHS gets GH¢150,000 ICT laboratory
The Tsenku Hiking Club at Obosomase in the Akuapem North Municipality of the Eastern Region has handed over a fully furnished Information and Communication Technology (ICT) laboratory to the Tutu Methodist Junior High School.
The GH¢150,000, 30-seater facility is equipped with 21 desktop computers, 40 student desks and chairs, a projector and a printer to enhance the teaching and learning of ICT.
At a ceremony to officially hand over the facility on Friday, April 10, the Vice-President of the club, Mrs Anita Budu, said the laboratory, which has internet connectivity, was intended to provide students with hands-on experience in computer science and digital literacy.
She explained that the project formed part of the club’s charitable efforts to improve education in local communities by expanding access to digital learning.
Mrs Budu said the facility was funded through contributions from members, with support from a corporate sponsor, Star Oil Ghana, during the club’s 2025 Madness Walk Project.
She noted that the club’s impact had grown steadily over the years, adding that in 2019, it donated about 90 desks and chairs to the Akuapem-Obosomase Methodist Basic School, which improved teaching and learning.
Mrs Budu said the new facility was expected to enhance academic performance, foster innovation and prepare students for the digital age.
“The donation marks a significant milestone. Access to a fully functional laboratory is no longer a distant aspiration but a present reality.
“In communities where resources are limited, this project represents a meaningful step towards expanding educational opportunities and shaping the future potential of students,” she said.
The Headteacher of Tutu Methodist Junior High School, Mr Prosper Agbawu, described the ICT laboratory as a centre for learning, innovation and digital skills development.
He said in a rapidly evolving world where technology plays a crucial role in education and opportunity, the facility would help bridge the digital literacy gap and equip students with the skills needed to succeed.
“We celebrate this achievement, but we also recognise the need to sustain and expand this initiative. We have come together to seek additional support to ensure that the facility is well resourced, properly maintained and able to serve future generations,” he said.
Mr Agbawu expressed the school’s gratitude to the club, noting that the gesture underscored the importance of community support in transforming education.
The Member of Parliament for Akuapem North on the ticket of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Mr Sammi Awuku, pledged to provide security personnel for the school and ensure they are paid to enhance the safety of students, following reports of theft on the premises.
Mr Awuku said he was committed to supporting educational development by partnering with local organisations and the Ghana Education Service (GES) to improve infrastructure, particularly ICT laboratories and libraries, as well as provide learning materials to increase access to quality education.
