Include humps in road designs — U/W Minister

The Upper West Regional Minister, Alhaji Amin Amidu Sulemani, has entreated the Ghana Highway Authority to, as a matter of policy, include the construction of road humps in communities to prevent speeding and accidents along the roads.

He observed that the lack of humps were compelling residents in those communities to take the law into their own hands to dig trenches in the middle of the roads, thus reducing the lifespan of the roads and also causing inconveniences to motorists.

Alhaji Sulemani was speaking during a courtesy call on him by the Minister of Roads and Highways, Alhaji Inusah Fuseini, at his office in Wa.

The road minister,  who was accompanied by directors of sector agencies of the ministry,  were enroute to Hamile as part of an inspection tour of the Western Corridor roads.

Alhaji Fuseini briefed the minister on the level of work done on the Western Corridor roads and thanked him for the reception accorded them.

Road humps

Alhaji Sulemani said "since we are unable collectively as a nation to discipline ourselves for people to know that when they are entering a town or village they must slow down, we should make it a policy to make the construction of road humps official, even though it is not the best".

Alhaji Sulemani,  who was once the Minister of Roads and Highways, said even though it was not the best thing to do on highways, “we should make it a policy to make road humps official in the construction of such roads”.

He said the road network in the region was a major developmental challenge and appealed to the ministry to put the roads in shape to accelerate growth.

The minister expressed concern over the delay in the construction of the Wa-Hamile and Wa-Han roads which were started in May 2014, but later abandoned because the contractors complained of  “non-payment” by the sector ministry.

The sector minister,  Alhaji Fuseini, gave the assurance that the ministry would take a second look at the various issues raised by the regional minister and act accordingly.

Western corridor roads

The Western corridor roads, span over 680km beginning at the Elubo Junction in the Western Region, through Sunyani in the Brong Ahafo Region to Banda Nkwanta through Bole in the Northern Region to Wa  and ends at the Ghana-Burkina Faso border at Hamile in the Upper West Region.
