Intensify corruption fight - Koforidua Anglican Diocese urges govt

The Koforidua Diocese of the Anglican Church has called on the government to strictly enforce laws against corruption and prosecute suspected offenders.

The church also indicated that government officials engaged in indiscipline and acts of lawlessness should be punished through due process and application of the law.

These were contained in a nine-point communique issued at the end of the third session of the 14th Synod of the diocese held at the St Augustine Anglican Church, Larteh Akuapem, in the Eastern Region in June this year.

The communique, which was signed by the Bishop of the diocese, Rt. Rev. Felix Odei Annancy, said corruption had become pervasive in the country, describing the canker as a threat to national development.

It encouraged Christians and all citizens to live the Godly virtues of honesty, integrity and selflessness and also practise the values of probity, transparency and accountability.

Economy

On the economy, the synod acknowledged the relative improvement made in diverse sectors after the turbulence caused mainly by external factors.

The communique, however, said there still remained serious economic difficulties facing a majority of citizens that require urgent attention.
It said that improvement in the economy must reflect in positive growth in Gross Domestic Product (GDP).

Youth unemployment

Touching on youth unemployment, the communique stated that the growing population of unemployed youth may result in serious social challenges if unattended to and, therefore, urged the government and the private sector to provide support to the youth and also encourage them to engage in agricultural and industrial ventures.

2024 elections

With regard to the December 7 general elections this year, the church commended citizens for the stable democracy and constitutional rule the country had enjoyed since the commencement of the Fourth Republic.

It further admonished citizens, political parties and other stakeholders to ensure peace and unity before, during and after the polls.

The synod also called on the Electoral Commission (EC) and state security agencies to fully enforce laws against electoral malpractices during the polls.
