This was at the 2015 edition of the Head of State Award Scheme (HOSA) and first Ghana Business Awards held at the Banquet Hall in Accra on Tuesday.

Junior Graphic won the award in a category that had its sister brand, Graphic Showbiz, as its only contender.

In all, 20 young individuals received the National Gold Award for their exceptional contribution to national development while 20 corporate and non-governmental institutions were honoured for their support to youth growth.

The Chief Executive Officer of Wonder World Properties, Nana Kwame Bediako, was adjudged the Youth Entrepreneur of The Year.
The event was on the theme: “Rewarding Business in Support of Youth Development.”

Invest in the youth

In a speech read on his behalf by the Minister of Education, Prof. Naana Jana Opoku-Agyemang, President John Dramani Mahama said his government was committed to investing immensely in the development of the youth.

He mentioned the establishment of the Youth Enterprise Development Fund as one of the many initiatives the government had put in place to promote youth development and also ease the burden on job seekers and first-time young businessmen and women.

President Mahama observed that his government had over the past years invested in various projects aimed at empowering young people to rise above average.

In the education sector, he said over 5,000 uniforms and 10,000 shoes had been given to schoolchildren and added that many initiatives had been implemented to boost the quality of education.

Touching on the awards, the President said “it seeks to develop and maximise the potential of young people through selfless community service, challenges of adventure, skills development and physical recreation to make them exceptional individuals who can contribute to national development.”

He said the award would also motivate young people to challenge themselves by undertaking initiatives that would boost their skills and talents.

President Mahama, therefore, encouraged the awardees to reach out to their peers in the communities to enable them to also cultivate the positive attitude towards development and values.

Corporate bodies

President Mahama said it was commendable that corporate institutions in the country were focusing their activities on youth development and that the country needed more corporate institutions to support the awards scheme for more young people to be equipped to develop their communities.

In his address, the Executive Director of HOSA, Ghana, Mr Peter Akai Anum, said the awards programme continued to play a vital role in the sub-region and the world at large in terms of impact and best practice.

“We continue to help shape global youth polices through participation in international youth forums, trainings, as well as serving on important committee and councils,” he said.

For his part, the Minister of Youth and Sport, Dr Mustapha Ahmed, said the award offered the platform for young people to develop their skills and aspire to achieve the best in their chosen career.
