Known as the Moremi Initiative Leadership Empowerment and Development (MILEAD) Programme, participants, including career women and students, will be equipped with world-class knowledge, skills, values and networks they need to succeed as 21st century women leaders.

The MILEAD is a long-term leadership programme that brings young African women leaders to Ghana for a three-week mentorship.
An official launch and opening ceremony had been held in Accra to admit participants to start the 2015 edition of the programme for free. They include three Ghanaian women; Miss Baaba Gyakyewa Jackson, Miss Edem Doreen Asimadu and Miss Vera Addo .

During the training, participants will interact with top-notch business executives, leaders from academia and government officials to build their capacities.

Selection process

In an interview with the Daily Graphic, a Co-founder of the Moremi Initiative, Mr Mawuli Dake, said this year, as many as 3000 applications were received from more than 40 African countries and African women in the diaspora, and that indicated women’s interests in the training programme.

He said participants were women who had shown the courage and commitment to lead and shape the future of Africa, noting that they were chosen through a highly competitive selection process and criteria based on their outstanding leadership skills, community service accomplishments, and commitment to the advancement progress of women in Africa.

Long-term development plan

The MILEAD Fellows Programme is a long-term leadership development programme designed to identify and promote emerging young African women leaders to attain and thrive in leadership in their community and Africa as a whole.

“The main purpose of the programme is to build a community of African women leaders who are focused on making an impact in leadership in all areas,” Mr Dake said.

Speaking on the theme, “The power to lead — the commitment to serve,” a Deputy Minister of Finance, Mrs Mona Quartey, reminded the participants that aspiring to be great women in society was not an easy task, but with persistence and hard work, that would be achieved.

For her part, a private legal practitioner and consultant, Ms Victoria Bright, urged women not to give up in the pursuit of their ambitions.

Using her life as an example, the former legal advisor to former President John Agyekum Kufuor said great women always faced tough times, but never quitted from the battle field.
