Kufuor, Naadu Mills receive awards for contribution to health
Three prominent Ghanaians, including former President John Agyekum Kufuor, have been awarded for their contribution towards promoting qualitative healthcare delivery in the country.
The Awards ceremony which took place at the College of Physicians and Surgeons in Accra was organised by Health Legend Foundation-Africa, a non-governmental organisation formed purposely to honour stakeholders who are contributing to bring about improvements in healthcare delivery in the country.
Ex-president Kufuor received the Star Award for his contribution in shaping the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) and instituting the free maternal health care.
Other awardees were the former First Lady, Dr Mrs Ernestina Naadu Mills, who won the Eagle Award and Kwame Nsiah Apau, known in showbiz circles as Okyeame Kwame, who picked up the Humanitarian Award.
Dr Mrs Naadu Mills was recognised for contributing towards reduction in infant mortality. Okyeame Kwame was honoured for the part he plays in fighting Hepatitis ‘B’.
So far, 20 distinguished individuals and institutions have been awarded this year including the Graphic Communication Group Limited which won the Media Health Advocacy Award.
Background
Health Legend Foundation-Africa is an autonomous organisation with a membership of outstanding health professionals and others from related agencies nationwide who undertake a yearly review of events that happen in the health sector of the economy.
In the past years, policy makers, institutions and individuals including Ghanaians and non-Ghanaians alike who had made striking contributions were awarded for their efforts.
Objective of HL-Africa
The Executive Director of Health Legend Foundation-Africa, Mr Kwame Daikon, said the organisation is driven to provide accurate and relevant information on healthcare delivery in the country.
According to him, the NGO would in its effort to ensure sanity in the arena of health, expose all forms of unprofessional attitudes exhibited by some health professionals whose conducts go to mar the reputation the sector has achieved.
Furthermore, he said, the organisation would spearhead a crusade preventive healthcare and continue to motivate health workers by awarding those who work hard.
He said the award ceremonies have gone a long way to motivate many healthcare professionals and non-professionals alike to attain high standards in their professions.
