The items included 1,000 pieces of packed lunch, cooking oil, fruits, soft drinks, toiletries, bathroom slippers and soap.

The association, which was formed about four years ago, made a similar donation to the prison inmates last year.

The total number of inmates in the prison is 824. They include 25 women.

The president of the association, Mrs Grace Adjei-Bisa, who delivered the items on the prison’s premises explained that the members were touched by the plight of the inmates.

She also said it was the objective of the association to assist in making life comfortable for the needy within the bank’s operational area.

The bank, with its headquarters at Shama, has several branches in the region.

Appreciation

The Western Regional Commander of the Prisons Service, Deputy Director-General of Prisons (DDGP), Mrs Josephine Fredua-Agyemang,who received the items, expressed gratitude to the association for the gesture.

She said the government could not shoulder the responsibility of caring for prison inmates across the country, hence the need for public-spirited individuals and groups to complement the efforts of the government.

The regional commander expressed the hope that some of the items, especially the musical instruments, would assist in a training programme designed by the prison’s administration towards reforming the prisoners.
