The clearing of the drains is to save Ashanti Region from experiencing flooding.

The company has started collecting refuse from Ejisu and Asokore Mampong Municipal assemblies to final dumping sites at New Bonfa.

Besides, the company has begun the construction of major drains and roads to major sites to allow for free flow of water and make the areas accessible.

The projects include disinfection exercise, clearing and reshaping of the roads, especially in the Ejisu/Juabeng area.

The Municipal Chief Executive for Ejisu, Mr Afrifa Yamoah Ponkor, lauded the company for helping to ease the apparent danger in the municipality and to safeguard the area.

He reckoned that the health needs and the environmental cleanliness had been enhanced as areas that hitherto were engulfed in houseflies had been cleared of refuse.

The Regional Engineer for Waste Landfills, Mr Peter Essie-Mensah, said the move was to collaborate with the Local Government Ministry to also help reclaim major lands.

He said currently many refuse sites in the Ejisu Municipal were being filled with laterites as the final dumping site was sprayed regularly to make the area safe.

He said plans were afoot to bring on board all the 30 assemblies in the Ashanti Region to prevent flooding to avoid anything similar to the disasters at the Kwame Nkrumah Circle in which over 150 people were killed by flood and fire.
